Georgia Tech Avant-Garde: End of the Year Celebration

In its first semester Avant-Garde unexpectedly* became the hottest new group on campus, we were invited to do events and fashion shows with several organizations including, but not limited to: The Women's Resource Center, Students for Sustainability, AASU African American Student Union, The GT Photo Club, GT Student Center Programs, GT Craft Center, GT College of Management, and more. The 2008 Spring semster was a big hit and we planned to end it with a grand Gala- that was suppose take place in GT's historic Britain Dining Hall (yeah we think Outside of the box), but with time beating us- it was postponed then replaced with a quaint yet cool Celebration... complete with art, fashion, photography, music, food, poetry, dancing, and more.

Our food was catered by Calypso Cafe- Atlanta's best Jamaican food
We had photo shoots before, a cool rock band, djs, spoken word and poetry, then we ended the night with breakdancing... it was the PERFECT way to end a stressful Georgia Tech school year.

Our role: Jacinda helped organized, we had models in the show- Erin, we organized hair and makeup using the Paul Mitchell hair school (thanks to Mimi), we also helped direct photoshoots and photo angles.

Our Story.

Avant-Garde was birthed from the heart of Tech Alumna Cindy. In December 2007, she sat in the BSO Office after finishing her last final and conversed with fellow students about life, school, and fashion. She began to talk about how she always wanted to create a fashion and arts organization, AG Alumni- Romanda Powers and Chanel Rogers were present and supported the idea. So over the Christmas holidays she created a detailed plan for this new organization-- she was excited!

On her first week back Cindy managed to gather over 30 interested pupils, secured an adviser-- Jackie Cox, and filled out the paperwork to make Avant-Garde an official organization.

With the help of friends she managed to get the word out and applications were turned in for those interested in executive positions. On February 19, 2008 Avant-Garde held its first official meeting. A dozen executive members were introduced and close to 102 potential members came out to learn more about Avant-Garde.
